A question we get somewhat often, in one form or another, is “I’m thinking about starting a new business soon, and I like to have a logo developed. What are some things to think about or do, as a first step?”
To start off, congrats on your new venture! Speaking from experience, despite being a tough process, it’s a fun one too. After choosing a name, a logo is a great place to start in branding your new business! Some suggestions to get you started thinking about the “look” you want to develop are:
1. Research your competition
Note the prevalent theme of your industry. Is it edgy, serious, conservative, bold? Then, think about how you’d like your business to fit in that current landscape. Should your look be similar to clearly indicate your industry? Or does your company hope to break the mold and go a new direction than the others? Neither is right or wrong!
2. Think about the colors you’d like to have included.
Different colors invoke different moods. A skateboard retailer may want to choose colors that reference movement and fun, while a natural products manufacturer would want a different palette.
3. Think about possible imagery.
If your business name references an item, you may or may not want to include that. Do you want to feature your main product in your logo? Or a reference to a service you provide? If your name doesn’t make things entirely clear what you do, is there an item or scene that would help explain what you offer? Or perhaps you don’t wish to include an image at all and want to use the words of your company name themselves in a creative way, as your complete logo. Again, there is no right or wrong!
